New Kahui - Tīeke

This week we have moved into the three new Kahui's! From right to left the Kahui's is named, Tīeke, Riroriro, and Mōhua. The Kahui's are named after the local birds. We (Sh) are in Tīeke with Ts. Mt, Ds, and Al are In Mōhua, and Tz and Bh are in Riroriro. It took two years to build all three and it cost $27 million in total, so we are really lucky to have these.

When I walked into our new buildings I saw a wooden tier seating area to the left and some TVs with colourful lights on the rim all around the place.  I also saw a lot of posters that used to be in Sh, and some that I hadn't seen before, which I assumed were from Ts. I saw some whiteboards that weren't attached to walls, and green and orange bookshelves sitting by the left and right walls. I saw a few tables scattered around, and five charging stations behind the wooden tier seating area. In front of Riroriro, there is an outside area with artificial grass and a little hill by the right side of it.

When I walked into our new buildings I thought, "Woah, this place is so big and so cool!". Then I thought "Is this really our new classroom? Do we deserve this? Why do we deserve this? Am I dreaming? Is this real?". I didn't think about anything else, and then I remembered there are three of these buildings. I was so hyped up, but I got deja vu once we walked into the second Kahui because the buildings are the same, but there are different things inside. When I saw the hill in the grassy area, I thought that it was shaped like a croissant and it looked fun to play on.

When I walked into our new buildings I felt a sense of belonging and accomplishment for making it through the year to get this. I also felt the door, which was glass and metal. I felt like I was never going to get this again, so I had to enjoy it while I could. I felt like I was going to melt because I was so confused at how they built this place, I felt like I was in a maze! When I rolled down the hill outside, I felt burnt because there was sand under the grass and it hurt.

In conclusion, I love our new Kahui's and I'm glad we got them. Even though I'll only be here for another term, I'll still make the most of it.

2040 Documentary

We (Sh, Ds, Mt, Ts) have just watched a documentary called 2040. It looks at the aspects of global warming and climate change. To me it was boring, but it enlighted me because now I know some ways I can help the environment.

What surprised you?
That it was 1 hour and 35 minutes long.

What excited you?
Nothing because I found it very serious and boring because it repeated stuff over and over.

What Worried you?
How they got most of the camera shots because it looked very dangerous.

What are the two things you learned?
1. I learned that seaweed is very important because it helps get rid of the carbon in the air when it stores it in the ground.
2. I also learned that we have the decision to make, and depending on what decision we make, the world is at stake.

What would you like to see in 2040?
Better transportation, more renewable energy, renewable resources, more farms, more trees, and better farms.

Maori language week!

Because it's Maori language week, I've made this DLO so you can learn a few words that you can use in your normal sentences to make them mixed. Here it is:

Hurumanu - Water cycle

AIM: TO LEARN ABOUT WATER ON EARTH.

Definition:

Related image

Scientific words:

  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapour.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapour cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

THE WATER CYCLE SONG

Image result for the water cycle

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Two Images:

  • I noticed that there are a few drops of water.
  • There isn't much water cycle happening?

  • I noticed that the bag is acidic.
  • The colour of the litmus paper has changed.

Findings:

The Water Cycle: Bag 1
CO2 Water Cycle: Bag 2
Acid
Desert Water Cycle
Bag 3
Does it cycle?
22no
Amount of Water
22no
Acidity
13no

Key: Water and acidity amount: 1 = none
2 = small
3 = large

Conclusion: The first one we did had only a few drops of water, but no acid. The second one had a lot of drops of water, but a lot of acidities, the water drops were scattered all over, unlike the first one.

The Amber Dragon & I.

Today we had to do some freewriting, so I wrote about me, in a medieval era, but I just found a dragon egg. I hope you enjoy it, here it is!

The Amber Dragon & I.

Once upon a time, I was on my way to the famous wizards' tower. I didn't have much time, I was wearing my old shabby gown because I had just escaped from the town. I had discovered a huge scaly egg, of some sort, I found it just lying on my porch. The egg was as black as obsidian and as yellow as a bee, I pondered and wondered, for what could it be? I was getting near the door, when I tripped on a rock, luckily, I gave the door a vast knock. The door opened, and as quiet as a mouse, the wizard exclaimed: “what are you doing at my house?”. I told him “you silly old man, I need some help, I found an egg that’s scaly and it yelps.”. The old man said “Be careful! Be careful!” as he lit a match, “That’s a dragon’s egg, by the looks of it, it’s about to hatch!”. And hatch it did because as soon as I saw, I felt that my head was quite sore. I couldn’t see, the dragon breathed smoke from its nose and I looked and I looked the dragon’s tail was as long as a hose! The dragon was quite amber and a bit of red, I mean, from the egg had the dragon just shed. Before I knew, he imprinted on me, The wizard jumped and jumped and shouted with glee. I thought the old man was crazy, but now I knew, “Haha! He’s imprinted on you!”. I asked “How is this good, tell me now! You have to tell me! Tell me how! How! How!“. “The dragon is friendly, I must admit, he will make an amazing house pet.”.

And that’s how I got here, six months later, I have just trained my dragon how to be a successful waiter. He knows a lot of tricks, he can sling a brick, if you ask me, he’s pretty fantastic. He’s apart of my family, he’s like no other, and if I’m right, I might’ve just discovered his brother.

Tane Mahuta Rock Painting!

In Tane Mahuta today we cleared out a lot more things from the outside classroom. We also got to paint a rock of our choice, each. First, we had to design the picture that would be on the rock after we got it. I designed a cat with a suit. Then we got to painting, which was so much fun! Here's a photo of the rock I painted:
It was really hard to paint because the rock wasn't that big, but I think it looks good. There isn't much to see on the back (Just the suit and the back of the head) so I'm not going to show it. I picked a cat in a suit because I love cats and I love cats in suits. I wish I could paint another, but I can't.
I really enjoyed designing the rock the most, out of everything I did, because it was really challenging and fun at the same time.

Tane Mahuta and Kiwi Kaha

Today we had Tane Mahuta and Kiwi Kaha. My class had Kiwi Kaha first before other classes and it was awesome.

In Kiwi Kaha, we had to sit at five different tables (to be sorted into five different groups) and as a group, we had to do a quiz where one person runs up to the table and Andre checks the answer.  The group I was in (Me, Jamie, Jodecy, Mitchell and Keghan)came first! We didn't have time to do an energizer, but in the end, we got full points which means that we will be going to the Kiwi Kaha party at the end of the term!

In Kiwi Kaha, I enjoyed working with my group to do our best and, even though we got some wrong, we kept trying.

I had Tane Mahuta in the second half of period 2, period 3, and period 4. In period 2 and 3, I did some weeding around the plants that we have already planted and, I did some weeding in an area that we are about to plant, I also helped with getting some shrubs out of the ground in front of the outside classroom.

I enjoyed getting the shrubs out of the ground because I got my hands dirty and, it was challenging because it took muscles to shorten it first so we could dig it up.

Ella west visit

In Period one today, we headed to the auditorium because Ella West came to visit our school! Ella West is a very talented Author and Journalist who has written six books! Her first three books were a series, but her other three aren't. Ella told us that she wrote 40,000 words on Night Vision, but 50,000 on Rain Fall.

Her fourth book is called "Night Vision" and it's about a girl who has XP. XP is a disorder which basically affects kids genes where they can't go out into the sun. The girl in the story witnesses a car being put on fire (at night) in the middle of a forest, so she tries to stop the trees from catching on fire. It's really dangerous for the girl because she has XP, but she lives. The girl has Night vision goggles, so that's why the book is called "Night Vision". Her Fifth book is a translation of Night vision to Italian. The title in Italian means "The deceptive art of owl".

Her Sixth book is called "Rain Fall". It's about a girl named Annie, her missing neighbour and a mysterious boy riding a horse. Ella Didn't tell us much about the story in Rain fall, but she did tell us that the places in the book are real places, that she had to look up on google maps.

I'm hoping I can read Night Vision and Rain fall because they sound amazing and the stories sound awesome. I enjoyed listening about Night Vision more because there are real places in it and one fake place as well, so it's a variety.

.

The Greenhouse Effect experiment

Materials:

  1. 1 Plastic bottle,
  2. 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda and Citric Acid,
  3. 1 heat lamp,
  4. 1 Thermometer,
  5. 100 ml of water,
  6. 1 rubber bung.

Procedure;
  1. Get all of the ingredients ready.
  2. Set up the lights, bottle, thermometer, and the bung.
  3. Add the baking soda mix along with 100ml of water.
  4. Wait for 5 minutes and start recording the temperature.

Variables:
All water added to the bottles were from the classroom tap.

Findings: The Greenhouse Effect Data
